Dr. Russell Murray

Music Director Russell Murray began his musical studies with the trumpet at the age of ten. Dr. Murray earned his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Redlands and his Master of Music Education from the University of North Texas. During his time at UNT he served as a teaching fellow and he studied with John Haynie (Inside John Haynie's Studio: A Master Teacher's Lessons on Trumpet Life) and Leonard Candelaria. Dr. Murray went on to earn his PhD in Musicology from UNT. He taught music history and directed early music ensembles at UNT, Texas Wesleyan University and Rice University. He is currently Professor and Associate Chair of Music at the University of Delaware, where he is the director of the Collegium Musicum and is on the Core Faculty of the Women’s Studies program. He has been at the University of Delaware since 1991. Dr. Murray is active as a scholar of Renaissance music. He has published articles in numerous journals and encyclopedias, and has presented papers at national and international conferences. He is co-editor of Music Education in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, published by Indiana University Press. Dr. Murray's research has focused primarily on North Italian sacred music of the Renaissance. His work has been funded by the Fulbright Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition to his duties as Music Director of the Chesapeake Silver Cornet Brass Band, Dr. Murray performs with Newberry's Victorian Cornet Band.
